Meet John P. Kartsonis, MD, FAAD

Board-Certified Dermatologist

John P. Kartsonis, MD, FAAD

Dr. Kartsonis is a Board Certified Dermatologist in private practice in Jacksonville, Florida for over 20 years. A Jacksonville native, Dr. Kartsonis graduated from the University of Florida and the the George Washington University Medical School. He completed his Dermatology Residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a past Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida College of Medicine, past President of the Jacksonville Society of Dermatology and active volunteer in the community.

Dr. Kartsonis provides the highest quality skin diagnosis and treatment using proven advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment specializing in general, surgical and cosmetic dermatology as well as laser procedures and light therapy.

Dr. Kartsonis is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a member of the Duval County Medical Society, and the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. He is also part of Baptist Physician Partners and St. Vincent’s Medical Staff.


Dr. Mary Hurt MD, FAAD

Mary Hurt, MD, FAAD

Board-Certified Dermatologist

Dr. Mary Hurt is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in medical and surgical dermatology.  After graduating from the International Baccalaureate Program at Pensacola High School, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame cum laude.  She was a member of the Naval ROTC program at Notre Dame and then was selected for a Health Professions Scholarship to medical school.  She earned her MD cum laude from Creighton University in 2003 where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Hurt completed her internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego.  She went on to Naval Flight Surgeon school where she earned her wings and then was assigned to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 4 as a flight surgeon.  Subsequently, she completed her residency in dermatology at Naval Medical Center San Diego.  Her first assignment as a dermatologist was at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, CA where she cared for Marines and their families for four years.  She then was assigned to Naval Hospital Pensacola.  During her time in the Navy, she trained many family medicine residents in dermatology.

After 13 years of military service, Dr. Hurt entered private practice at Medical Center Clinic in Pensacola, FL for two years before moving to the Jacksonville area with her active duty Navy husband and children.  She has been practicing dermatology for over ten years now and she is happy to be a part of Dermatology Specialists of North Florida. 

Dr. Hurt is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a member of the Jacksonville Dermatology Society.

Joanna Peña, APRN, FNP-C

Nurse Practitioner

Mrs. Joanna Peña is a Nurse Practitioner (APRN, FNP-C) with years of experience in the health care field in dermatology and other specialties at the Mayo Clinic and other private settings.  

Mrs. Pena graduated from Jacksonville University with a Master of Science in Nursing, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.  She graduated with honors and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.  She received her Bachelor in Nursing from the University of Central Florida, and a Bachelor in Community Health, with a minor in Exercise Science, from the University of North Florida; graduating with honors in both programs. She is a member of Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Science Honors Society.  
Mrs. Pena’s career in health care began in 2009 as an Exercise Physiologist for Florida Hospital Celebration doing executive health assessments.  She quickly realized that she had a passion for improving the quality of lives of others and began her journey to become a Nurse Practitioner. As a graduate Registered Nurse, she worked on the Mother Infant Unit/Women’s Health floor. Later, she worked on a Mohs Surgery dermatology team and as a Lead RN for Mayo Clinic.  She began her Nurse Practitioner career as a mobile provider in the field, working with dermatology patients in assisted, skilled, independent, and memory care living facilities. 

In her spare time, Joanna enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 children, and 2 labradoodles.  She is an avid runner who has completed 4 full marathons, and several ½ marathons.  She also enjoys yoga, bicycle riding, and finding sharks teeth at the beach with her family.
